This is our selection of bamboo that can withstand temperatures from -10°F (-23°C) and below. These are great for places farther north where winter winds and storms can drop temperatures well below freezing and kill off many other plants.

Phyllostachys Atrovaginata (Incense)

This variety is also known as incense bamboo since the surface of the culms when rubbed produces a scent similar to sandalwood. This is also a hardy plant that can survive down to a -15°F (-26°C). It typically grows to a height of 30 ft (9m) and is a favorite of landscapers. The sprouts are very good to eat with no bitterness even when raw. This is also a good choice for wet areas and erosion control, however do not plant in standing water or swampy areas.

Phyllostachys Aureosulcata (Yellow Groove)

This commonly referred to as yellow groove bamboo, it can reach a height of 45 ft and a diameter of 2.25 in. It is very cold hardy down to a -15°F (-26°C). This is a very popular bamboo both in the USA and China. The mid season shoots are excellent to eat with no bitterness even when raw. It is a fast grower and spreads rapidly in warmer climates. Phyllostachys Aureosulcata Alata

Phyllostachys Aureosulcata f. Aureocaulis

This is a yellow culm bamboo that may have some green striping on the lower internodes. It is an attractive addition that will add uniqueness and color to your collection. It grows to a height of 34 ft. Its maximum size will be around 1.25". It is a hardy bamboo that can handle cold down to -15°F (-26°C). Phyllostachys Aureosulcata f. Spectabilis

The common name for this bamboo is spectabilis. This is a medium sized bamboo growing to a height of 32 ft and a diameter of 1.75 in. It is a very hardy bamboo, able to withstand temperatures of -15°F (-26°C). It is a yellow bamboo and is very attractive. It likes full sun. Spectabilis is Great for Screening or as a Hedge. Phyllostachys Bissetti

This is a fast grower and can establish a grove quickly. It is a excellent candidate for a hedge. It grows to a maximum height of 40 ft with a maximum diameter up to 2". It is extremely hardy and can handle cold down to -15°F (-29°C). It should be planted in full sun. The early season shoots can be harvested for the table. Great for Screening.

Phyllostachys Decora (Beautiful Bamboo)

This is a medium sized bamboo that is quite hardy and is also called Beautiful Bamboo. It can withstand temperature down to -11°F (-24°C). It grows to a height of 30 ft and a diameter of 2 inches. This variety shoots in mid-season, it is more tolerant in high ph, sandy soils, drought and temperature extremes. This is one of the more aggressive runners and will make you a beautiful grove faster. Great for Screening or as a Hedge.

Phyllostachys Heteroclada (Water Bamboo)

This is a medium sized plant growing to a height of 33 ft with a diameter of 1.5" in full sun. It's common name is water bamboo. This bamboo can be planted in flood plains (not swampy areas) that would otherwise drown most plants and is also good for erosion control. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures down to -5°F (-21°C). Great for Screening or as a Hedge.

Phyllostachys Heteroclada f. Solida (Solidstem)

The common name is Solidstem. The lower half of the culm is solid thus the name. This is a smaller bamboo that can be used in smaller areas as it's maximum height is 18 ft. It is cold hardy down to -11°F (-24°C), it's maximum diameter is 3/4 in. It likes full sun.

Phyllostachys Nuda

This is a medium sized bamboo growing to a height of 34 ft with a diameter of 1.75 in. It is one of the best for being able to withstand very cold winters down to -20°F (-29° C). It makes excellent hedges and screens, the wood is a very good quality often used in the making of furniture. The early season shoots are excellent table fare.

Phyllostachys Viridiglaucescens

This is a medium sized plant growing to a height of 35 ft with a diameter of 2 .75 in. This bamboo is a hardy plant down to -11°F (-24°C). This is a favorite in Europe but rarer in the US. The shoots have a slight bitter taste but are excellent table fare.

Pleioblastus Fortunei

This is commonly called Dwarf Whitestripe Bamboo. It likes partial sun and can withstand temperatures down to -15°F (-26°C). This bamboo will reach a maximum height of 4 ft but usually stays around 2.5 ft.
